Hey friends! I emailed like 3 days ago, but we had so many miracles happen!!
This week was Oshougatsu which is a huge week-long holiday. Traditions
include: pounding mochi, family parties, drinking lots of alcohol, and
going to the shrine to pray for good fortune.
We went and had lunch with a member and his parents who took us to a
shrine and we got to walk through and see everything. It was so cool.
You wait in a long line, and once you get to the doorway, you throw in
some money, clap a few times, and pray. There was also a place to get
your fortune. It is just written on a piece of paper and you find your
birthday. My fortune said something like "your dreams are big and will
take a long time to achieve, the person you marry will be from far
away, you will have sons, you will have good health and a long life"
and so on. Now everyone is joking that I will marry someone Japanese!
Haha! It was fun to take part in the culture!
We had a huge miracle with the Miura family. We are teaching their
grandma, who is in her 90's. She hasn't really been progressing, and
it is hard for her to hear. Well a few weeks ago I had a dream where
someone came to me and told me I needed to help Yasuko (the grandma)
read the Book of Mormon. I called the family the next day and told
them, and it turns out they all had the same dream. Cool right?! So we
get the appointment set up but then Yasuko had to go to the hospital.
It wasn't looking too good, but miraculously she got better and we
were able to have this lesson. We got there and she could not hear us.
I had prayed so hard that she would be ble to hear us. I said another
prayer in my heart, and tried again. She looked straight up at me and
could hear perfectly. Everyone gasped! We were able to teach a short
lesson and all of her family members, who had converted and served
missions, got to testify to their mom that they knew the Book of
Mormon was true. Then Yasuko san said "Okay, I will read it. I will
start right now" and she walks in the other room and starts reading it
out loud. We all sat in that room in awe and it was quiet for a
moment. Then Yasuko san comes back in and says "why haven't you told
me about this Book before?" We all laughed and then ate a big feast :)
huge miracle!
The next miracle was we had about 15 minutes left before we needed to
go home, but we felt like we needed to go to a specific area that we
had put as a back up plan. We prayed, felt good about it, and went. On
the third door, a woman comes and we ask her "on a scale from one to
ten, how happy are you?" She said "I am not happy at all". We spoke
with her and she told us how her mother passed away recently and how
now she was alone. She started to cry and I just hugged her for a few
moments. We were able to testify that families can be forever, and
that she would see her mom again. We pulled out our plan of salvation
paper and showed her that death is not the end. It was amazing. I felt
prompted to tell her that we had been sent from Heavenly Father today
to find her. We are teaching her again tonight.
On Sunday during sacrament meeting, many people got up to bear their
testimonies. All of the Miura family got up and shared how excited
their were to see their mom read the Book of Mormon. Nakamura Kyoudai
said he saw us praying before we knocked on his door and testified of
the power of prayer and being missionaries to our families.
This gospel is true! I am a witness that God loves us. I know that
through the Savior's atonement we can be free of guilt. I have seen
this change many people's loves, including mine.
I am so thankful for my mission. It has changed me. I love the gospel so much.
That is all for this week! Stay tuned for more miracles next time :)
